Jan Rotmans

I am a socially engaged scientist, with more than 200 publications in the field of climate change & global change modelling, sustainable development, and transitions and system innovations. After my PhD-research and my work at RIVM I became the youngest professor of the Netherlands in 1997, at the Maastricht University (ICIS: International Centre for Integrative Studies). In September 2004 I have founded the new research institute DRIFT, Dutch Research Institute For Transitions, and have become full professor in transitions and transition management at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Apart from my scientific work I also intend to contribute to a better society. I wish to open the way to a sustainable society. Therefore a radical change, a transition, is necessary. With my knowledge I would like to make up the rules and transmit them to the people involved in any project, region or sector, so that they can give it a swing into a more sustainable direction.

To give the Netherlands a more sustainbale future I co-founded the Urgenda-foundation in 2007. As member of the board I try to encourage as many people as possible into this movement. The major event of 2009 is the Dag van de Duurzaamheid on 9/9/9.
